Ammonium thioglycolate is used to break disulphide bonds in lashes. This makes it possible to change the shape of lashes and put them in a new position, such as a curl or lift.
Step 2, often the neutralising step, is essential to stop the chemical process. This is usually done with a neutraliser that helps to repair the disulphide bonds and lock the lashes into their new shape.
However, the new formulation can also rely on certain ingredients that act as natural stabilisers or restoratives, even without a formal neutralising step.
Cysteine - Helps strengthen bonding:
Cysteine is an amino acid and an important building block of keratin. After disulphide bonds are broken, hair becomes more flexible but also weaker. Cysteine helps to repair and strengthen the hair's structure by supporting the keratin and stabilising the bonds in their new form. It does not completely repair the bonds like a traditional neutraliser, but it does help keep the hair strong in its new shape, preserving the curl or lift without a separate neutralising step.
Sodium sulphite - Stops the process:
Sodium sulphite, often used as a neutraliser, is not as powerful as standard neutralisers such as hydrogen peroxide, but it can stop the chemical action of Ammonium Thioglycolate. It helps to stop the breakdown of disulphide bonds once the desired curl or lift is achieved. This may be enough to prevent further damage and allow the shape to "set" without a formal neutralising step.
In summary, although the product has no traditional neutralising step, the combined action of Cysteine & Sodium sulphite and other conditioning ingredients help to stabilise the new curl or shape. Cysteine Helps restore the structure of lashes after disulfide bond breakage, while Sodium sulphite stops the chemical process to prevent further disruption. Conditioning ingredients such as Macadamia oil and Polyquaternium-6 ensure lashes remain strong and hydrated, further supporting curl or lift.
